1990
Colin Angle, Helen Greiner, and Rodney Brooks—all with backgrounds in MIT's Artificial Intelligence Lab—founded iRobot with the goal of making practical robots a reality.
1996
In 1996, iRobot developed the Ariel robot for mine clearance in coastal and underwater areas. Its crab-like design enabled it to navigate difficult terrain and served as an early demonstration of the practical use of robots in hazardous environments.
2002
The Roomba, first introduced by iRobot in 2002, was an autonomous robot vacuum cleaner that could clean floors independently. It marked a breakthrough for household robots and made iRobot famous worldwide.
2005
Introduced by iRobot in 2005, Scooba was the company's first household robot capable of both vacuuming and wet mopping. It complemented the Roomba and expanded its cleaning capabilities to include wet hard floor cleaning.
2015
In 2015, iRobot ushered in a new era with the Roomba 980, integrating Wi-Fi and smartphone control via the iRobot Home app for the first time. In the following years, the devices became increasingly intelligent—with features such as room mapping, voice control, obstacle detection, and the combination of vacuuming and mopping in one device.
2016
In 2016, iRobot launched the Braava jet, a compact robot mop capable of precisely and efficiently cleaning hard floors with either wet or damp cleaning. With its improved navigation and the ability to control various cleaning modes via the app, it expanded iRobot's portfolio with a specialized floor care solution.
2022
Starting in 2022, iRobot launched the Roomba Combo series, the first robots that combine vacuuming and mopping in one. These models feature advanced navigation, obstacle detection, and improved app control for flexible and efficient cleaning.
